Question:
iService 5.x fails to load with the error "Unrecognized configuration section system.serviceModel in machine.config"
Answer:
This error is caused by an issue in the Microsoft .NET update process which may cause iService and other applications relying on .NET to fail.  In particular, we have seen this occur on servers running iService 5.x which have both .NET v3.5 and v2.0 installed, where both versions have had updates pushed out at during the same update process.  When this happens, the machine.config file which .NET references can refer to improper configuration parameters.

In order to resolve this issue, we strongly recommend uninstalling all versions of Microsoft .NET 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 on the target server, and then installing .NET 3.5 alone, which already contains backwards compatibility with applications requiring these previous .NET versions.
